Intramuscular Dry Needling:
Intramuscular manual therapy using dry needling is a very effective therapeutic technique to resolve muscular pain. Muscle pain can present as pain in the muscle belly, tendons and even in the joints the muscles affect. Acupuncture needles are inserted into trigger points in the muscle. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point, the point shuts off leaving decreased pain and increased flexibility. The effects are dramatic and long lasting.
What to expect:
Acupuncture needles are very thin because no solution is injected through them. They are also very blunt so damage is very minimal if at all. When the needle is inserted into healthy muscle there is almost no sensation at all, but when the needle is inserted into injured tissue or a trigger point the tissue can spasm or twitch. The patient usually feels a deep ache or cramping sensation. When the needle is removed the patient may feel heaviness and soreness different from the original injury. This may last up to 48 hours. The patient should drink plenty of water throughout this 48 hour period.
Why choose dry needling:
- Dry needling can resolve an injury in 1-3 sessions instead of weeks of therapy.
- Dry needling can get into tissue that cannot be reached with traditional manual therapy techniques.
- Dry needling is extremely effective with eliminating scar tissue leaving injured tissue as close to its premorbid state as possible.
Dry needling is ideal for the person who doesn’t have time to be injured
